MAHANANDA

SYNOPSIS

Trifles are, more often than not, the causes of catastrophic changes. Such is the case of Mother Parvathi and holy Ganges, the twin wives of Lord Shiva.

Enraged at the discourteous way in which the two wives ell to quarrelling even in his presence the Lord cursed them to be at once born to a prostitute mother on the earth.

How inconsiderate the quality of anger --- of even Gods!

all the city of Benares shared the bounty of Viswamohini the greatest of prostitutes. She was blessed by becoming the mother of the two Goddesses and they were called Mahananda (Parvathi) and Sadananda (Ganga).

As they grew of age the mother yearned her hoarding up of immense wealth through Jambuka her brother. He was the Agent-General of supplies.

One day when in worship of Shiva on the banks of the Ganges, Narada appeared and blessed Mahananda. But when she craved for 'Panchakshari" She was denied it on the plea of her birth. This strengthened her resolve to obtain Shiva at any cost.

All the machinations of Viswamohini and her brother failed on both the girls.

Narada went to Swarga and kindled the love of Indra by this praise of the virtuous Mahananda. As iron to magnet he started to gratify his lust in spite of the warnings of Narada.

Narada's prayer to Shiva to save the unfortunate girls were heard in Kailas.

Narada and Thumbura the celestial musician conspired to teach Indra a lesson and they took the shapes of a beggar boy (Narayana) and girl (Thumba) respectively.

Tample manners and cunning overtures lured many a milionaire into Viswamohini's clutches only to be disappointed and deprived of their wealth in the end.

Then came Indra. Sadananda was presented as Mahananda. Thumba who joined their service persuaded her to be ... him since no harm could befall her on account of the charmful ring she gave her. On the sight of it Indra fell into sleep and Sadananda escaped unmolested.

Mahananda was beaten by her mother pitilessly that same evening for not obeying her and thrown into a dark cell. Thumba appeared there and urged her to accept him that gave her bangle made of a diamond. When Viswamohini heard of it she released her daughter from the prison.

Indra came fo know of the deceipt played upon him and flew to Viswamohini's house in anger. Just then Mahananda was in her bath. He peeped in and for the outrage lost his sight. In agony he left for Kailas followed by Narada.

Jambuk and Thumba fell to fighting due to the former's misbehaviour and the latter was subjected to very bad treatment by Viswamohini. The sisters who protested to their mother were also treated to the same feast and all the three were pushed out of the house.

Lord Shiva granted sight to Indra on account of the pitiable appeals of Indrani. When the husband and wife left Kailas Narada appealed to Shiva to take back the holy mothers. He started for the earth.

Shiva came to Viswamohini's house in the guise of a Sadhu. He showed the diamond bangle. He got immediate admission.

But the girls were peaked out. They rambled through the streets of Benares gathering men and women round them. At a convenient place Mahananda addressed them on the evils of prostitution. Viswamohii came on the spot in great glee only to be set on by the infuriated mob. The sisters saved her from their fury and all went home.

Mahananda was overjoyed at the sight of the Lord, though in disguised and accepted him readily. She entertained him with her dance and music. Yet he was not satisfied. He started in his way. She followed him. He beguiled her on the way. Through hills and dales, snakes and tigers, rain and storms she suffered. She would not leave her quest. Nothing daunted her. Could she gain her object?
