ఆంద్రలోకోక్తిచంద్రికాశేషము. 2654. స్వర్గారోహణపర్వం చదువుతున్నాడు.

Hei is reading Swargarohanaparva. Swargarohanaparva is the last or 18th chapter of Mahabharata which contains the story of Pandavas ascending to the heavens. The saying is applied to a person on his death-bed.

2655.. హనుమంతుని యెదట కుప్పిగంతులా.

What ! will you jump before Hanuman? i.e. Who can jump like the monkey-chief? Applies to a redicluous attempt.

2656. అండలేనివూళ్ళో వుండబోము, ఆశలేనిపుట్టింట అడగదోషం

It is wrong to live in a village that has no protection; it is wrong [ for a woman ] to ask [ for any thing ] in the house where she was born if there is no love [ for her ]•


2657. అంపబోయిన అల్లీసాయెబూ, పిలవబోయిన పీరుసాయెబూ, మాయమైనారు.

Ali Sahib who went to set out [the departing guests], and Pirr Sahib who went to call him, both disappearedf.

2658. అత్త యెత్తుకొని తింటూ వుంటే, అల్లుడికి మనుగుడుపా.

If the mother-in-law live by begging will the son-in-law have feast? Manugudupu is "a final entertainment given by the bride's parents to the bridegroom, after the conclusion of the whole marrige ceremonies." (Brown)

2659. అయితే ఆడబిడ్డ, కాకుంటే, మొగబిడ్డ, అతీ ఇదీ తప్పితే అంతా అబద్దం.

Perhaps a female child, if not, a male child ; if neither this nor that, it is all a lie.

Said by an astrologer when consulted regarding a pregnant woman.

2660. అయిసరబోజ్జ, తోప తోప.

Bravo! Bravo!—Wale! Wale! A man was once fed with porridge ( topa ) in his mother"in"law's house. Never having tasted it before and wishing to have some at home he enquired its name—on his way home he had to jump over a nullah; on his clearing it, a bystander cried out Aisarabozva " Bravo ! Bravo!" The man in his excitement forgot the word topa and substituted for it Aitarabotva and beat his wife because she could not make the dish until wales rose on her body. There is a pun here on the word topa.

2661. అరే గడ్డితినే కోమటీ అంటే, యేమోయి బెల్లం తినే సాయెబూ అన్నాడట; అట్లాఅంటివేమి కోమటీ అంటే, అతనికి అది వాడుక నాకు ఇది వాడుక అన్నాడట.

"Hollow! grass"eating Komati," said [a Mussulman], "Well! molasses"eating Sahib," replied [the shopkeeper]: "How is it you speak in this way T asked [ a bystander ], "He is accustomed to that and I to this," said [ the Komati. ] i. e. He meant to say that the Mussulman was accustomed to grass and he to molasses.

2662. ఇంట్లో లింగాకారం, దోవలో చక్రాకారం, యిక్కడ జడలా కారం, యెక్కడా అన్నాకారం లేదు అన్నాడట.

At home the form of the Lingam, in the road the form of the Chakra, here the form of matted hair, but no where is there the form of rice. Said by a disappointed man. At home he was too poor to eat any thing but Sankali ( No. 2512) which being coarse food stands up in the dish like a Lingam. When travelling to visit a relative he could only get in the road common round cakes ( Dose ) in shape like the Chakra (Vishnu's discus ) and when he arrived at his kinsman's house instead of being treated with good fare he was only given Zantikalu ( country Vermicelli ).

2663.వున్నవూరు, మన్నప్రజా.

Is it a village that I have lived in? Are the people those with whom I have been intimate 1 Said of a strange place.

2664. ఉన్నశాంతం వూడ్చుకొని పోయినదికాని కోపమే లేదు.

All my patience is swept away, but I am not at all angry. An ironical speech used by a man boiling with indignation.

2665. ఎవరి పయిగుడ్డ వారికి బరువే.

Every man feels his own upper cloth heavy.

2666.ఏట్లో పడ్డవానికి యెన్నూయెన్నికలు.


To him who has fallen into a river how many thoughts [ do not arise?] Said of one in utter despair.

2667. ఏపట్లా చావకపోతే బాపట్లకు పంపండి.

If he does not die in any way, send him to Bapatla.

i. e. If you can't get rid of him in any other way, send him to that place. Bapatla is a village in the Guntoor District, once notorious for the rascality of its inhabitants. The Revenue officers sent there to collect the land tax are said to have been killed one after the other by being accommodated on the day of their arrival with a dwelling infested by hornets, which came out in the night and disposed of the obnoxious visitor!

2668. ఒళ్ళంతా తదిసినవెనుక వూపలేనివానికయినా చలిలేదు.

After the whole body is wet even an invalid does not feel the cold.

2669. కక్కిన కూటికి ఆశించరాదు.

You lshould nto wish for lfood thrown up. Don't wish to get back which you have given away.

2670. కలిగినవారింట కడగొట్టుకోడలు అయ్యేటంతకన్నా పేదవారింటి పెద్దకోడలు అయితే మేలు.

Better be the eldest daughter-in-law in a poor man's house, than the youngest daughter-in-law in a rich man's house. The eldest son's wife has authority in a household next to a mother-in-law and in the case of the latter's death she become mistress of the establishment. The youngest son's daughter, though generally petted, is allowed no petted voice in the management of the household affairs.

2671. కూడువుడికినవెనుక పొయ్యి మండుతుంది, కులం చెడ్డ వెనుక బుద్ది వస్తుంది.

After the food was boiled the fire burns well. after the caste has been lost [a man's] sense comes.

 i.e. He comes to his senses after loosing his caste.

2672. కేశవా నారాయణా అవ్వా బువ్వపెట్టు.

O Kesava! O lNarayana! --O grandmother! give me food. A boy began his Sandbya but noon bfoke off to ask for his food.

2673. కొంగు తడిస్తే చలిగాని కోకంతా తడిస్తే యేమిచలి.

If the hem be wet, cold {is felt}, but if the whole garment be wet, what cold [hefelt?].

12 (89) ఆంద్రలోకోక్తిచంద్రికాశేషము.

2674. గంగాధరుడు చచ్చినాడు అమ్మా.

0 Madam! Gangadhara is dead. The story is as follows :—The washerwoman of a certain Queen had a female donkey which was pregnant. The woman vowed to Siva that if the donkey was safely delivered she would call the young one Gangadhara ( one of the names of Siva, signifying " the receiver of the Ganges" ). The birth took place and the vow was fulfilled, but after a short time the young donkey died. The washerwoman was in great grief, neglected to bring the Queen's clothes, and weeping cried out " Gangadhara is dead!" The servant sent from the palace, thinking that Gangadhara must be some important person, went crying to the Queen. The Queen believing that a relation of the king had died commenced to weep, her whole household joining in her lamentations—the king on enquiring the cause of his consort's grief received the same information that Gangadhara was dead, whereupon, imagining that he was a relation of the Queen's, he joined in the general howling, in which he was assisted by all his court! When the truth was at last known, all were ashamed.

2675. ఘోరకలి..

The horrible Kali Referring to the Kaliyuga " the Iron Age." Applied to crimes of great enormity.

2676. చచ్చినా పయికం తప్పదచ్చమ్మ యిక తిట్టకు.

Though you die the money must be forthcoming—0 Achchamma! Don't abuse me any more. A Brahman after eating is bound by the ceremonial law to repeat the following: అమృతాపిధానమసి! రౌరవే పుణ్యనిలయే పద్మార్బుదనివాసినాం! ఆర్ధినాముదకం దత్తమక్షయ్యముపతిష్టతు.ii

O Amrita! thou art a covering. May the water given to the hundreds and thousands of [thirsty] askers in hell, the habitation of the wicked, endure without diminution. The above is a parody, the allusion being to a hard"hearted creditor and hypocritical formalist.

2677. చిన్ననాడూ లేవు, పెద్దనాడూ లేవు, చంధ్రశేఖరుడినాడు చెవుల పోగులా.

I had them, not in childhood, nor in age, am I now to have earrings in Chandrasekhara's time?

 Said by a father to whom earrings offered when, in his old age, a son had been born to him. 

2678. చుక్కలూళ్ళో చక్కరాలు తేబోయినాడు.

He had gone to fetch Cakkilams from star-town. i.e. He has died. For cakkilam see No.1609.

2679. చూస్తే సుంకం, చూడకపోతే బింకం.

If seen duty; If not seen-- bragging. The allusion is to a person attempting to smuggle goods through a custom house--If caught, double duty was sacted.

2680. చెడ్డాపడ్డా చేబ్రోలే గతి.

If one is unfortunate, Chebrolu is a refuge. Cebrolu is a village in Guntur District.

2681. తప్పతిని కులం మరచినట్టు.

Eating to excess, he forgets his caste. Said one of a man who, being sumptuously entertained forgets his low origin.

2682. తప్పులేనివాణ్ని వుప్పులో వెయ్యమన్నాడట.

Put the faultless man into the salt. If you cannot ruin him in any way, put him into the Salt Department--there you can easily bring a charge of dishonesty against him and get rid of him.

2683. తింతలు తూతినవే, తూతే తాతే తాలంతత్తే తూతూతకతాతకతోనా దొందూదొందే.

"The tamadinds .have flowered." [said one]. "When the time of blossoming and bering fruit comes, will flowers amd fruit be wanting?" [Said another] "you are both alike," [said the third] Three sisters suffered from an impediment in their speech--each thought she spoke better than either of the two. The first instead of "chintalu puchinave," said "Tintalu tutinave" the second pronounced "Puche kachii kalam vaste, puyaka kayaka ponh?" as "Tuti tate talam tatte, tutaka tataka tuna? " and the third, taunting, both her sisters, said of their speech "Dondu donde" for "Rendu rendi" (literally, "the two are two").

2684. తిట్టితే కోపం, కొట్టితే నొప్పి.

If you abuse--anger, if you beat--pain.

2685. తిప్పులాడీ మా అప్పను చూచినావా, తీర్ధంలో మాబావను చూచినావా.

Well, you effected creature, did you see my sister? Did you see my brother-in-law at the festival? An effected weoman sees no person except herself.

2686. తిమ్మన్న బంతికి రమ్మంటారు కాబోలు.

Perhaps they'll ask you to dine with Timmanna. Timmanna is a jocose for monkey. The hoistrous fun at the time of investing a Brahmachari with the sacerdotal thread is called in joke Thimmannabanti. the monkey feast.

2687. తిమ్మన్నా తిమ్మన్నా నమస్కారము అన్నాడట; నాపేరు నీకు యెట్లా తెలిశినది అంటే, నీ ముఖం చూడగానే తెలిశింది అన్నాడట.

"Timmanna! Timmanna! I salute you cried " one--"How did you know my name?" said the other " I knew it directly I saw your face' replied the first.

2688. తుడుముకాడినుంచి దేవతార్చందాకా వకటే మాట.

From the torn-torn to the ownership of idols, he has but one word.

Said of an ignorant man, who has but one idea in his noddle.

2689. తొత్తువలె పాటుపడి, దొరవలె తినవలెను.

One must work like slut and eat like a gentleman.

2690.నా నెత్తురు నావాత కొట్టుతాడు.

He casts my blood into my mouth. i.e. He harasses and annoys me exceedingly.

2691. నీలకంఠాయ విద్మహే కొలుకులూరాయా ధీమహి1 తన్నూగుడ్లూరుః ప్రచోదయాత్11

We think on blue-throat, we meditate on blue eye- corner;may the eyeball-village stumulate us. A padady on the Durga.Gayatri:- కాత్యానాయనాయ విద్మహే కన్యకుమారి ధీమహి1 తన్నోదుర్ఘిహెః ప్రచోదయాత్11

We think on Katyayani, we meditate on Kanyakumari; may Durga stimulate us. Said a joke to a boy about to cry.

2692. పాడు అయిపోయిన కూరలు బాపడికి.

The rotten vegetable to the Brahman.

2693. పిలిచేవారు వుంటే, బిగిశేవారు శానామంది వున్నారు.

When sought after, many become proud.

2694. పుచ్చిన వకాయలు బాపనయ్యలకు.

The rotten brinjals to the Brahmans.

2695. పెక్కు రేగుల్లో వక జిల్లేడు బ్రతుకునా.

Can a Jilledu live in the midst of Regu bushes?

How can a good man live in the midst of the wicked/

2696. బ్రహ్మచారీ శతమర్కటం.

A Brahmachari [is equal to] a hundred monkeys.

2697. ముక్కులో వెంట్రుక కొప్పులోకి వచ్చి మూగవాడు అమ్మా అన్న నాటికి చూతాము.

We will see about it when the hair in the nose coems into the top-lock and the dumb man calls out "Mother!"

2698. రేగుచెట్టుకింది చెవిటి గుడ్డి నాని వత్తు.

Like the deaf blind man under the Regu tree.

The story runs as follows:- A deaf blind man insisted on being taken to a comedy, and begged his friends to nudge him when anything very amusing was so that he he might laugh. They pretended to agree to this, but left him half way under the Regu tree, telling him that the performance was going on there. He sat there all night laughing whenever the slender branches of the tree, moved by the wind, touched him.

2699. వండవే పెండ్లికూతురా అంటే, కుండ తీసుకొని నీళ్ళకు వెళ్ళుతాను అన్నదట.

When the bride was asked to cook, she said she would take a pot and go for water.

2700. శుభాలుముంచి దీపాలు ఆర్పేవాడు.

One who drowns fortune and extinguishes lamps.

Said of a man who causes the ruin of others.
